Genius Destroyer Strategy – METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE

admin

This guide will help you to attain the ‘Genius Destroyer’ achievement. It is obtained by defeating Monsoon without taking any damage on Hard difficulty, or above.

Introduction

Monsoon can be considered one of most difficult bosses to no damage in the game. His unpredictable attacks, combined with his inability to be invulnerable to your attacks, make him a frustrating opponent to defeat. This is especially true on higher difficulty. Problematizing matters is the fact that Monsoon does not have an easily accessible checkpoint in his fight like Sundowner and Mistral. If you make a mistake, you will likely have the fight from scratch. Despite frustration and many failed attempts, I managed to completely an*lyze Monsoon’s attack strategy. This guide will help you to understand how to use this attack to defeat Monsoon.

Note that I did the achievement on Hard and it may not be accurate for Very Hard/Revengeance.

The Loadout

The Murasama is the ideal primary weapon as it has a high overall performance. It should be fully upgraded. You have unlimited fuel cell capacity for this fight so absorption and consumption will not matter.

As a secondary weapons, you can use the Pincer Knives, which are known as the most deadly melee weapon of all time. The weapon’s damage should be increased to maximum so that it can deliver a devastating attack. Simply hold down on the strong attack button until the weapon flashes. Then release to deliver a devastating blow. Additional unlockable abilities allow it to perform up to 2 followup attacks that can also charge, but you are unlikely not to use them in this fight due to Monsoon’s agility coupled with the terrible speed and second and third strikes.

Go crazy with your choice of armor or wig. I am currently using the Infinite Wig A (White Armor) but neither have any real use for this strategy. The damage of the yellow and red artificial muscular muscles is slightly greater than the other. However, the downsides are not relevant as you have unlimited energy and are trying to minimize damage. They can be a bit of a ha*sle to get though and you can easily do without them so I wouldn’t worry too much.

Fighting the good fight

Monsoon immediately sprints towards you to attack and begin the fight. To make him regret this, hold down on the loading screen the strong attack button so that you can immediately start charging the Pincers. Release the blades to deal over 1600(!) He will be reduced to approximately 79% health by releasing the blades. Fully charged Pincers increase their range and provide a huge damage boost. Once fully charged, you can release the blades immediately to deal maximum damage to him.

Monsoon was dealt a serious blow by the blades. However, he is unlikely be stunned by this attack. Despite their slowness and ability to cancel into a block, the pincer knives can be used to counter Monsoon’s attack. Your swing will be cut if you parry too soon. Instead, Monsoon will take around 2.5% damage. The Pincer Blades “super armor” is another thing you should be aware of. This means that you can be struck while swinging your Pincer Blades. However, Raiden will not flinch from the pain and will not vocalize in pain. If you’re not careful, you could easily inflict damage on the Pincers. You can then simply not notice to confirm that you were injured until it is too late.

Monsoon has six different attacks that he can use even though he isn’t magnetically charged.

His first attack consists of a 7-hit combo and his sais. You can use the parry input to get it done. His second attack is a series four kicks. They come out slightly slower than the sais but have a very different animation.

His third attack and fourth attacks leave him looping behind you, rather than attacking you head-on. So be ready to defend your back or side. He can either jump kick you harder or throw your body into the air to deliver a follow-up attack. Although you can parry the aerial followup as normal, you will already be damaged by the kick so it’s not important to mention it.

Monsoon’s fifth attack includes him falling on you from above. He will only do this if you have scrolled him offscreen. So locking on to Monsoon is an effective countermeasure. If he hits you with this attack he will either slash or pin your down and perform the famous “A pleasant walking in London” attack. You will already have suffered damage before he starts stabbing, so just start over if this happens.

Below is Monsoon’s greatest attack at this moment, the Red Phosphorus Grenade. You can see it as a small green dot in the ground.

Monsoon won’t use this attack in the fight and is unpredictable when he uses. It is very dangerous due to this. You will need to pay attention to his animations in order to avoid it.

The RP grenade has the purpose of allowing Monsoon attacks you from any direction around 10-11 times. However the real danger of it is the fact that you will take a very small amount of damage if the Defensive Onense skill is not used properly. If Raiden stumbles back, choking the gas, you’ll know that the explosion hurt you. To avoid the smoke explosion, you can just react quickly to Monsoon’s strikes and wait for the smoke to clear up.

Monsoon can escape onto a pole if he has 70% health. If you can stun him with a combo, or another charged Pincer strike, it is possible to reduce his health to approximately 65% before he can retreat. While this isn’t necessary to defeat him in the end, you can still get a little satisfaction from beating him senseless when he can’t.

Jack! Nature’s force!

After jumping up onto the pole, there will be a brief cutscene showing Monsoon activating his MAGNETIC POWER! and then slowly jumping back onto the gate. It’s likely that you will see this cutscene many times.

Monsoon will throw 2 waves full of garbage at your face. Each wave will contain more objects than before. You can choose to run away, but the flying vehicles have a bad habit of blowing up in front of you, so it’s best not to do that. Unless they have turned black due to your hitting them, the vehicles can hurt you. Although most vehicles can be dealt with by swinging your sword violently left and right, you may have to do more. To deal with some, you will need to aim your sword to the left or right.

Notably, the vehicles that are destroyed can drop EM grenades. To get some bonus BP, pick them up.

After you have survived the barrage vehicles, Monsoon jumps back down to the floor and takes out his sais. Monsoon glows purple and will not react to your attacks. After he has completed his combo, you can counterattack and hit him in the face to dismember him. You can stun Monsoon with an EM grenade. But, they won’t let you get the secret dialogue. It’s also not as fun as blocking your attacks.

After a short delay, he will take exactly 9 steps toward you, starting and ending the walk on his right foot. This is done to give the attacker time to attack them, but we will try and stay as far away as possible so that he doesn’t use his harder attacks.

If you are safe from Monsoon’s reach, he will attack you by sending his various parts to attack you in very predictable ways that can be easily blocked.

First, he will attack you with both his arms in a 4-hit combination. Counter-attacking his arms will stop the combo from happening early and deal chip damages to Monsoon. You should be aware that his second arms moves slightly faster than his first, which makes it easier to counter.

Next, Monsoon’s legs will be detached and he will run at your feet and attempt to attack you with four kicks. It can be countered to injure Monsoon. They make a short hop just before attacking so be aware of this when you are preparing to counterattack.

Monsoon will use his limbs against you and approach you at moderate speed. His legs will be re-attached before he uses 7-hit combination with his sais. He will be stunned when you counter his attack and you can enter blade mode to hit his head. Monsoon will still be able to dodge your attacks if you aim too close to the neck.

If you fail to hit Monsoon in the head, or even stun him with the counterattack at all, run away from him immediately. Monsoon in magnetized mode is able to use much stronger versions his unpowered phase’s attack, and he can also use two new powerful attacks. But all of these attacks are only possible when you are very close to him. You can hit him again if he is far away.

Monsoon’s newest attack, pictured below, is similar in style to the LQ84i charging attack. However, Monsoon is able to perform it multiple time in a row and can continue if blocked.

Monsoon also has a new attack that is extremely dangerous. He starts rapidly firing at you his body parts and disa*sembles into an enormous tornado. It’s extremely difficult to stop or avoid without getting hit.

Once you’ve hit Monsoon in the head, he will eventually fall apart. I hope you’ve got him locked down by now. Otherwise it’ll be difficult to locate his severed heads and slice away at them before he comes back.

After you have approached Monsoon’s neck, attack it a few more times. Next, prepare your Pincer Blades and launch a powerful attack. Monsoon should be able to release the blades immediately after he has rebuilt his body. He will still be hit with the swing regardless of any action he takes afterward. This will likely reduce his health to about 40% but not below that and knock him off his feet. You can then hit him a few times more before he attempts to attack you again. Monsoon is likely to perform another garbage throw attack. However if you reduce his health to 40 percent before he can, he’ll skip it and move on to the next phase.

The Utopia of Death

After Monsoon’s health has been reduced to 40%, Monsoon can jump onto the World Marshal building to reveal a ma*sive pile of trash. He will then spin at you. You will have a few seconds to parry the wheel and then you can use Blade Mode to slice it.

After you have destroyed Monsoon’s garbage wheels, Monsoon will jump down to begin the final phase. He will immediately use his separat attack when Raiden returns to the camera, so be prepared to defend it.

Once Monsoon has been dismembered and stunned again, perform another charged Pincer attack on the reformed Monsoon. If successful, you will reduce his health by 20%.

Monsoon will then throw another wave of objects at the you. Remember that objects may not fly at the object in the same order that they start spinning. This will not affect your ability to handle them.

Ending the fight

Monsoon will send another garbage truck at you if his health is below 10%. Monsoon’s final move is to destroy it in the exact same way as the previous one.

Once Monsoon lifts the monument and points it at Raiden it will be necessary to perform 3 quick button press: the Ninja Run, to jump onto the monument when it hits the ground and Blade Mode, to slice the APC along the way. Finally, an execution to kick Monsoon in the wall. You will immediately die if you fail any of these and must start again. DO NOT restart from the ‘dead’ menu, as it will count the damage you took in the process of being impaled/smacked/thrown in the next fight and you will NOT recieve the No Damage award. Instead, you will need to exit the title screen.

Once you have done the required inputs Monsoon is bound against the wall. At your discretion, you can tear him apart.

FAQ

Q: I didn’t receive the No Damage award. What are the reasons?

A: After Monsoon lifts Monsoon’s monument, the game restores all of your health. As stated earlier, you probably got struck while swinging the Pincers. Unfortunately, you didn’t notice it until it was too much too late. During lulls in action, keep checking your health to make sure that you didn’t get struck.

Q: How can you get the weapons for me?

A: The Murasama can be obtained by completing R-7: Assa*sination Attempt. R-04, Hostile Takeover is required to unlock the Pincer Blades. They can only be purchased for a modest amount of BP through the Customize screen.

Q: Why don’t you use EM grenades?

A: See below.

(BONUS) Secret dialogue

Monsoon will make an attempt to frustrate and frustrate you by telling you to finish Monsoon off at the end.

This is a way to defeat him that is extremely frustrating. You may not know, however, that there is an alternate way that you can play in very specific circumstances that no one seems very to understand. Monsoon will scream and scream as you cut him up if you are aggressive against him.

According to my testing, your “aggressiveness” can be measured not by your overall DPS but rather on the combination. You can build a ma*sive combo by using the Pole Arm secondary rather than the Pincer Blades. However, this will increase the fight’s length due to its lower damage potential. You can still achieve a large combo by using a lot if sword attacks against Monsoon, instead of trying again with the Pincer combo.

Listen to Monsoon before a phase shift to find out if you are satisfying the conditions. The voice lines change from mockery or amus*ment to fear or self-doubt.

I’ve also noticed that if you didn’t meet the game’s draconic conditions, if you restart from the checkpoint when Monsoon launches the monument, you suddenly will meet the conditions and Monsoon will freak out as normal.

Conclusion

I hope that this guide has helped in your quest to attain the achievement. I won’t likely make any more guides of the type you have requested in the future.
