Helpful tips for surviving the wasteland – Rust

This guide is created to help new players navigate through rust, and learn about the monuments, biomes, and playerbase.

Biomes

There are three biomes, but we only need to discuss two, as the final biome is just basic forrest and valleys

Snowy

Snowy

The Snowy Biome houses large amounts of resources from stone to metal to sulfer it has it all, however it is very hard to traverse, and you will need warming clothes if you want to survive this biome.

Desert

Desert

The Desert has low amounts of resources, but also houses the Giant Excavator Monument. The giant excavator pit is a fun, different and resourceful monument which will require players to sit and protect while the excavator is in operation. There will be many scientists so make sure to bring adequate protection, friends and just enough diesel fuel to get what you need.

Level Zero Monuments

Level Zero Monuments are monuments that don’t have puzzles, but sometimes have Green Keycards which are needed for later monuments.

Dome

Dome is well, a large dome. The Dome Monument within rust is a large dome surrounded by 3 silos and two metal sheds which house refiners that turn crude oil into low grade fuel. The dome contains a wealth of military crates and basic crates while dealing a low amount of radiation. Climbing the dome is a risky but rewarding you can fall all the way down, knocking you down in an instant. Make sure to bring clothes and a basic understanding of the layout for the dome.

Mining Outpost

Mining Outpost is a small shack that houses a small room inside of it. Mining Outpost has many shelves, most of them having the ability of spawning basic crates. There are also two car parts locations inside of the mining outpost that you can then recycle in the recycler in the middle of Mining Outpost, across from the repair bench.

Junkyard

The Junkyard monument was updated in the May 2021 update, and is now larger than ever. The junkyard is a low tier monument with a lack of military loot spawns and minimal utilities to take advantage of. However, this will make it great for low tier players looking to get a few quick crates, recycle some loot and gather scrap and metal, especially with the new magnet crane and shredder considering players can do some work for guaranteed scrap and metal fragments. The Junkyard also houses a recycler and a green card spawn in the containers behind the recycler.

Lighthouse

Lighthouse is a small monument that houses both a recycler and a green keycard. The lighthouse is a very tall and narrow monument that has a few basic crates inside of it, and large amounts of barrels surrounding and inside of the monument. If you climb to the top there is a basic crate at the very top of the monument. The green card is in the room to the right after you enter the lighthouse.

Supermarket

Supermarket is a small monument that houses a recycler in the back of it, and a green card inside of one of the side rooms. Supermarket typically spawns basic crates on top of it and a military crate inside of the room that the green card is in. There are also food crates scattered around all of the shelves, and small crates next to and above the recycler.

Oxums Gas Station

Oxums Gas Station is similar to Supermarket, it has a recycler and a green card. Inside of the greencard room is a military crate spawn, andjust outside of the green card room is the garage which houses the recycler and a hole under the car which typically has some small crates inside of it. There is also a basic crate spawn above the fuel pumps.

Level One Monuments

Level one monuments are monuments that take green cards and house blue cards.

Harbor

The Harbor comes in two different styles, a small Harbor, and a Large Harbor, The small Harbor has some barrels and a recycler, while the large harbor has that and a green card door. You can Gain a blue card from this monument if you bring an electric fuse and a green card. There will be a small room at the end of the harbor that needs a green card to access, first you will need to power this by inserting an electric fuse in the sparking area just outside of a small sliver box, and turn on the switch inside of the silver box, then run over to the green card area, swipe your card, loot the basic crate that spawns in there and grab the blue card on the table.

Sewer Branch

Sewer Branch is one of my favorite monuments, in order to do the puzzle and gain a blue card you will need a green card and an electric fuse. There will be a small shack that has a recycler beside it, go inside of the shack and put the fuse in the sparking box, then flip the switch on the other side of the room. Next head into the hole next to the shack, make sure to bring something that will give off light because you will be in complete darkness, follow the tunnel and unlock the door, if you explore around you will find a room with a recycler and the blue card should be up the stairs next to it. Sewer also has a parkour area in the middle of the pit, in which you can parkour up the building and gain access to some basic and military crates.

Satellite Dish

Satellite Dish

Satellite Dish is a monument that houses a research table inside of one of the satellites, and a recycler in another satellite. In order to do the puzzle you will need an electric fuse and a green card. Insert the fuse into the sparking box, then flip the switch next to it and run to the small shack next to it which should be the green card room, swipe your green card and head in, on the desk should be a blue card, and there should be some crates in there.

Level Two monuments

Level Two monuments are monuments that take either take blue cards or both green and blue cards, but give you red cards.

Air Field

The Airfield Monument within rust contains multiple hangers, watchtowers, and a central office building filled with loot, utilities, and the start of the key card puzzle system. The airfield additionally features a large underground tunnel system with a mine-shaft and a puzzle room found inside. Remember to bring protection since the airfield will be a dangerous and popular location for players to be.

Power Plant

The Power Plant monument within rust is a dangerous but exciting monument to explore and loot. It features large cooling towers which contain high amounts of radiation and a blue puzzle system which supports an additional green puzzle system. Many utilities can also be found throughout the monument such as the recycler, oil refinery, repair bench, research table, and pump jack.

Train Yard

The Train Yard Monument within rust contains a large water tower with multiple trains and rails within the centre. A large central building can be found which will contain the puzzle rooms and the majority of the crates found within the monument. Multiple utilities such as a recycler, oil refinery, and repair bench can be found around the train yard.

Level Three Monuments

Level Three Monuments are monuments that take either take red cards or are difficult to perform as they guarded by something.

Launch Site

The launch site is the most dangerous but rewarding monument in rust. With a rocket launcher and some friends, you can take the chance to destroy The tank named Bradley and acquire some of the best loot in the game. Bradley roams the monument and will kill anyone on sight, so be careful. You can also do the Red Card puzzle which will lead to good loot atop the main building, I recommend just looking up a youtube video I can’t really give a good explaination here.

Military Tunnels

The military tunnel is a dangerous but rewarding monument, providing you with 7 elite crates protected by multiple scientists with a green, blue and red puzzle system. However, the tunnels lack multiple utilities like other monuments and only contains a single recycler. Remember to be geared and bring meds, you are going to need it.

Arctic Base

The average radiation level is very low, only requiring at least 2 radiation protection. However, there is more radiation at the front of the monument (towards the tunnel entrance and puzzle rooms) which require at least a full burlap clothing set or 11 radiation protection. A red keycard spawns within the left blue keycard puzzle room (One opposite the snowmobile). It spawns at the back of the building on top of a generator. The arctic scientists will heal themselves if damaged during a fight. Currently, they are the only scientists to do this.

Doing this monument will allow access to a snow mobile, the snowmobile consumes 540 fuel per hour or 9 fuel per minute. The snowmobile takes 24 hours to decay outside and currently doesn’t appear to decay indoors. The snowmobile can drive at full speed in the desert/beach sand. Therefore, if you would like to take it to the desert, I would recommend driving it around the island on the beach. The snowmobile contains a skin that changes the model. This different looking snowmobile has all the same stats and control as the default snowmobile and is just cosmetic.

Abandoned desert military base

The abandoned military like the underwater labs, features procedural generation on its modules, making each base different from the previous. The base’s MLRS is also the newest way to raid bases, dealing large amounts of damage if not defended against using sam turrets. So, let’s unravel the abandoned desert military base and newest raiding tool called the MLRS, which can destroy a large number of structures in one event.

Oil Rig and Under Water Labs

There are two different Oil Rigs, Small which needs a blue card, and Large which needs a Red card, these are similar to the lever three monuments in that they are both guarded by scientists.

Large Oil Rig

The large oil rig will offer 6 levels with each floor containing multiple scientists and loot containers with no radiation. Within the red key card puzzle room, you can find a locked crate which will spawn a chinook and 11 heavy scientists when hacked. When looted the locked crate will provide some of the best loot in the game.

Small Oil Rig

Small Oil Rig

The small oil rig contains no radiation and offers a locked crate and multiple puzzles. The locked crate will spawn a Chinook filled with Heavy Scientists ready to mow you down. However, when looted the locked crate will provide some of the best loot in the game.

Under Water Labs

The underwater labs are the most unpredictable and eerie monument you can loot, with certain labs being better than others. Attempt to go to each of the three labs in your world to find the best one for puzzle loot or safety.

Safe Areas

In safe areas you can purchase goods from vendors or vending machines, there are four safe areas, Ranch, Outpost, Fishing Village, and Bandit Camp

Outpost

The Outpost is a friendly monument that houses large sentry turrets around it to protect it from anyone holding out a weapon. I has many vending machines that sell items at different prices. It also has a recycler and a repair bench in the outpost.

Bandit Camp

The Bandit camp has many guards around it in heavy armor protecting it from anyone who chooses to try and attack it. Bandit Camp has many vendors and also has a recycler right outside of the room with the gambling wheel.

Fishing Village

Fishing Village is a small area that has turrets around it protecting it from anybody who chooses violence, there are a few vendors there, and you can purchase a boat from the fishing village.

Ranch

The Ranch is a ranch that has horses you can take. You can take one if you purchase a saddle from the dealer that sells them, then you put your saddle on a horse, the same vendor also sells horse accessories.
